What will y(our) vote do?

For Freedoms 50 State Initiative

For Freedoms is a 50 state initiative started by Hank Willis Thomas to increase civic engagement by activating billboards around the U.S. The mission was to use art as the vessel for creating civic engagement before the 2018 midterm election. Our small team created a billboard and following events to help create engagement.

Insight

Idaho continuously has low voter turnout or little active discussion around political discourse. We have to reach across the aisle to begin to even start a conversation about politics.

Solution

Create opportunity for Northern Idaho to discuss and learn about political discourse using tabling, art-installation and the 50 state billboard initiative.

For Freedoms is a 50 state initiative started by Hank Willis Thomas to increase civic engagement by activating billboards around the U.S. The mission was to use art as the vessel for creating civic engagement before the 2018 midterm election.

Freedom To: Create a Scene

Over 200 student voices were showcased in this two day installation leading up to the U.S. midterm election.

Yard signs were installed on the University of Idaho Administration Lawn and then around the city of Moscow, Idaho to continue support for engaging conversations.

October 1, 2018

A tabling event was organized by Alex Brizee, Ethan Coy, Britani Phelps and Chelsey Flores where we asked community members to express the "Freedoms To, Freedoms For, Freedoms Of, and Freedoms From" they had in their lives. This was held on the University of Idaho Commons where students, professors and community members could participate in public discussion.

October 5, 2018

We hosted an event where the Moscow community and UI family were invited to write their own lawn signs that would eventually be placed on the Admin Lawn. This event also included a number of activities for participants to enjoy such as a photo op, ballon popping wall, snacks and drinks, and an opinion wall that included questions such as: Are you registered to vote? If not, why? Do you believe politicians are honest? Are political differences a deal breaker when it comes to family and friends?
